A small light driver is easier to package into the car.

Weight is not as important as height because many classes include the weight of the driver with that of his car.
Jackie Stewart
Height is more important to fit into the cars
Ayrton Senna, John Surtees, Alain Prost and Jackie Stewart are/were
all about 1.6 metres tall.
However Michael Schumacher is about 1.8 metres tall and it doesn't seem to affect him!

More importantly drivers must be fit in order to perform at their best through a long race.
