Mentally they must be able to concentrate hard to work efficiently in the noisy and stressful environment of a race cockpit.

Drivers must be able to drive effectively while also communicating with their pit crews and race engineers.

While it is not necessary for a race driver to be a mechanic or engineer an appreciation of the car's systems may help him 'drive around' a problem where there is there is a minor fault on the car.

They must also exhibit a degree of controlled aggression to perform competitively, while having due regard for their own safety and that of other competitors, officials and spectators.
